“Flute” research

Many thanks for the many good answers on the flute. A lot of variety showed in the details of the answers (in fact it could have been a reed instrument rather than a flute), but for the most part, the consensus seems to be that while both kinds of instrument are possibilities, the straight in front variety is more likely to have been played than the “cross flute” or side variety. A couple people even found a double-pipe (two-handed) variety, but that would be complicated for the signer to show, and lead us away from the point of the passage, which of course, is not about musical instruments at all, but about the (professional) mourners who were playing them.

Thanks for being a part of the translation effort!
